How to Build an Effective Creative Team for Small Churches

Updated: Jun 4

THE GIFT IS IN THE HOUSE

  • Create with what you have and who you have

  • Maybe a graphic designer comes before a photographer in your case

DON'T COMPARE YOUR CHURCH’S FEED WITH ANOTHER CHURCHES FEED

The beauty of the local church is the unique expressions of each church that they put out into the world. We all share the same message but express our love for God and for people differently Capitalize on how your church expresses its love for God and its love for people.

“STARBUCKS MAKES COFFEE DIFFERENT THAN COFFEE BEAN”

THIS SEASON IS THE BEST SEASON TO CREATIVE SYSTEMS AROUND WHAT YOU NEED

  • Assimilation - YOU NEED A PROCESS

  • BTW IF YOU NEED A GOOD PHOTO FLOW WE GOT THAT https://www.divinehustle.com/church-photography-guide

  • Build a simple process to onboard a creative. Don't set up a creative for failure.

  • You can create systems for people to enter and operate in their gifting easily.

  • If can't clearly communicate your process, it's too difficult. How do you think they feel about your process as well

  • SIMPLIFY YOUR SYSTEM (Content Gathering and Distribution)

So where the heck do you start?

ASK YOURSELF WHAT DO YOU NEED HELP WITH

When you find that volunteer or person to come onboard into your creative team, ask yourself how they are going to fit into your process.

WHAT DOES YOUR BANDWIDTH LOOK LIKE?

Where is time being sucked up and bottle necked for you? What are the things you don't need to be doing so you can focus on the things that need approval or to be done manually?

WHAT CAN YOU DELEGATE?

Naturally, as a church creative, you want your hands in everything. Control. Yup, give it to me. You need to create a priority bucket of things that absolutely need your approval. Like public facing edits or copywriting. Always keep your eyes on misspelling or branding mistakes. You can teach a creative simple ways like a checklist to go through before they create their final version of whatever piece of content needs approval.

WHAT ARE THE THINGS ONLY YOU CAN DO? AND WHY CAN ONLY YOU DO IT? IF ITS ONLY YOU THEN YOU’RE NOT DOING IT RIGHT

Let's not miss the mark on this. Church Creatives, Social Media for Churches and online communications is fun. It's not supposed to feel like work. It's supposed to be a fun process or you wouldn't be volunteering or continuing to feel under valued, underpaid, under resourced for no reason unless there was a payoff. Self fulfillment, maybe. You are in the business of communicating the message and branding your local church and it involves people. Your kind of people. Fun people. Creative people.

THE EASIEST THING THAT COMES TO YOU IS USUALLY THE FIRST THING YOU NEED OFFLOAD

Doing the simple things is a luxury. A gift. But growth happens when you look at the tough things you need to do and tackle it head on. Don't take the easy road on this one. Create a process. Simplify. Pass it on. Grow the team.

PRO TIPS

#1 Think of yourself as a facilitator!

#2 Steal what is working for other ministries

#3 Take other people if you must! If your worship team is loaded, balance them out by getting them involved in the creative team when they aren't serving.
